Walnut Canyon (The Quickest National Monument Trip Ever)

Walnut Canyon was always planned as a mid week trip. What wasn't planned was the work call that took Shawn 30 minutes past his usual time off. Nor was it planned that the Monument would have switched to non-summer hours. Nor did we plan on leaving the camera behind (sorry no pictures).

When we arrived we had just 1 hour and 15 minutes to walk the one mile trail and do the Junior Ranger Booklet. We whipped through the 1 mile trail in less than 30 minutes barely glancing at the ruins and mostly looking at our feet which were just inches from the path edge (very few railings at this monument). Honestly, you want to keep close to your little ones on this one so as to stop them from falling down.

This left us, well Shawn and the kids, with just 45 minutes to complete the Jr Ranger booklet. Thankfully it wasn't a tough one and the kids managed to finish it with 20 minutes to spare before closing time. We snatched up our usual complement of souvenirs and walked out the door.

It was a bit of a shame really as the canyon was beautiful and I am sure walking the rim trail would have been magnificent. I'm not sure I will remember much except the climb BACK up to the visitors center. It took me an extra 10 minutes to climb the stairs (me and altitude aren't very well acquainted). They say it's the equivalent of walking up 18 stories.....my legs feel like jelly.

However, it does give us a reason to come back to Flagstaff in a few years..........
